The world of education as we know it is a place built on a foundation that is surrounded by enigmas and empty promises. It is for this reason that America has yet to find an effective solution that works for schools nationwide that is “progressive” as well as “consistent” in the field of education. The articles and the book that we have read so far in class have left me a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I think about how far we have come and how many steps we continue taking backwards. Early on in the film, we learn that about 30% of African-American boys do not have their father in their life. While this statistic applies to several of the students we meet, Jamill’s story captured my attention more than the others. His experiences in school clearly demonstrate why having a good role model is vital for everyone, specifically African-American boys. Most teachers are white and female, and while they may be a good role model, they do not provide the representation that these boys require and deserve. They need a role model who they can see themselves in; everyone needs that.…

Studies have shown that with a high number of minority students, they have “less than a 50 percent chance of getting a math or science teacher with a license and degree in the field” (Darling-Hammond 1998). This was demonstrated in the movie when the math department held a meeting and one teacher said he couldn’t teach math anymore because he was supposed to be a gym teacher; even Mr. Escalante wasn’t supposed to be a math teacher. Wealthier schools hire most of the highly educated teachers and teachers with lower education are assigned to low-income and high-minority schools (Darling-Hammond…

A 2012 study by The RAND Corporation, a leading research nonprofit, found that “teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling.” Teachers play the role of educating students not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. In many instances, teachers provide important role modeling for students who may not have it at home, and school itself provides stability and consistency for high needs students. Teaching is so much more than just giving pointless assignments and incredibly hard tests that make students question, “What’s the point?” It is a career which helps shape students to be the best that they can be and it takes a very special person to do that.…
