Scrooged, an irrefutable 90’s film about a cynical, sarcastic, and terribly witty Frank Cross deals with the turmoil of life and death in a breaking-the-fourth-wall film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Scrooged is an interesting adaptation, compared to the usual animated family-friendly films that pay homage to the Christmas spirit. This film is not only different than the run of the mill film that copies the novel word for word, it also carries the darker tones of the classic Charles Dickens story that is unusual in contemporary Christmas films.
The movie is interesting because the plot involves a live show of A Christmas Carol, while the main character Frank, deals with the same plot in his own modern reality. Ebenezer’s nephew was also rewritten as Frank’s younger brother. Noting that it wasn’t a sarcastic tone about the nephew/brother and the missed party Ebenezer/Frank didn’t attend. The brother seemed sad and distraught, holding onto the sliver of hope that Frank would be the big, loving brother who was around.
Within the casted rewrites, the Ghosts of Christmas were also a little different. The Ghost of Christmas Past was a weird goblin/elf with bad hygiene and a tendency to cackle frantically at Frank’s discomfort. He didn’t float around but actually traveled back in time using a yellow cab. He also didn’t change shape or form and had a sassy attitude.
The Ghost of Christmas Present was nowhere near a “jolly Giant, glorious to see”, but a petite pale fairy with awful cellophane wings and an attitude on par with the Ghost of Christmas Past. She was bubbly and silly. She acted more childish and less food was involved. There was a lot of humor
