Civil Disobedience is a term that varies among different people. In the mind of Henry David Thoreau the definition of Civil Disobedience requires you to have at least three things. You must be able to identify an issue at hand. You must be willing to take action for that issue. You must be prepared to take responsibility for those actions.…
In Taming Democracy (2007), Terry Bouton gives a thoroughly somber interpretation of the achievements of popular economic and political reforms within Pennsylvania resulting from the American Revolution. Bouton argues that despite increased suffrage and political participation, the majority of “ordinary people” were disappointed in the system of democracy which evolved in the decades following independence. While a significant proportion of white males achieved notable political rights as a result of the revolutionary movement, “in terms of economic well-being that gave independence its meaning, life in postwar Pennsylvanian resembled the dark days of the 1760s and 1770s.” The elite class of society, who during the 1760s and 1770s supported…

Judging solely by the title, Kekla Magoon’s novel How It Went Down seemingly implies a factual description of how an event occurred. By utilizing a polyvocal narrative consisting of various demographics and intertwining relationships, Magoon rather portrays a lack of collective understanding of the detrimental incident of an African-American teenager being shot to death. Through giving personal viewpoints and opinions of many characters, the novel illustrates the manner in which emotions, varying relationships, and underlying racism can affect one’s judgment or perception of such an occurrence they are bearing witness to. These variables are also shown to affect the perceptions of people who did not directly witness the incident, but are impacted…

Men commonly do not understand feminism, but should those men who do be allowed to call themselves feminists? I agree with Kimmel when he answers no men cannot be feminists due to lack of experience and ever-present benefiting from systematic patriarchy, and should instead use the term pro-feminist.…
As Kelly Brown Douglas notes in her book Stand Your Ground, one of reasons for perpetuating slavery after the other Western European countries abolished it was due to America’s belief in Manifest Destiny. White Anglo-Saxons assumed they were called by God to rule the “New World”, but also to rule the Africans they had enslaved. In essence, God chose white people over all other races to be the ruling elites who dominate the world. They are the chosen people, in similar ways to Israel, who were God’s chosen people, determined to rule and colonize the “Promised Land”. Not only would Americans colonize, they would also proselytize and set an example of what pious morality ought to look like.…
