The three main characters Amadou, Seydou, and Kadijia all work as slaves on a cocoa plantation. In the plantation the conditions were hard and work break anyone with a low will to keep going. The children at the farm are taken at a young ange and forced to work all day, the conditions that they work under are extremely dangerous and risky. They openly weld machetes as their main tool which can lead to serious injury. This can be extremely depressing for the children on the farm to know that no one knows of the terrible conditions they are under and no one is going to help them. Seydou is the only reason Amadou continues the will to live, He says “”(Sullivan ). This shows that he loves and want the best for his brother and that he gives him strength. As the three protagonists continue in their journey to save themselves they realize that they all need each other to keep them mentally
