In the Social Problems book it speaks of functionalist perspective and how to is relative to the gay rights movement. During the past decades, the gay rights movement has effectively influenced family rights, employment, and discrimination policies throughout the world. The movement has been successful largely because of its ability to affect institutional (macro) level changes—the focus of the functionalist perspective (Leon-Guerrero 126). One movement for helping their community is Out Right Action International, formerly known as the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. This is a website and organization that helps fight for the equality that human rights gives to the gay and lesbian community. The website states this statement for how they work and why they do what they do, “Every day, LGBTIQ people’s human rights and dignity are abused worldwide in ways that shock the conscience. The stories of their struggles and their courageous resilience are astounding, yet remain unknown—or willfully ignored—by those with the power to make change. The Trevor Project website states, “Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.” It provides programs for struggling homosexual people. The programs provided are Trevor Lifeline which states, it’s a call center that is 24/7 and provides crisis invention and suicide prevention. Trevor Chat which is a free instant messaging service for the homosexual community that has volunteer counselors. Trevor Text which includes texting for young homosexuals in need of counselor for help and crisis intervention. The website also includes suicide prevention trainings and resources and community resources. The organization provides Trevor Ambassador group in Chicago, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. The website states that the Trevor Ambassadors, “are key volunteer groups in 7 major U.S. cities who work to expand Trevor 's program, communications and fundraising efforts to new geographic areas, helping to ensure lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth have the support they need locally when they face a suicide crisis.” The organization allows people to donate to their fight for the LGBT community.
