In addition to the four elements of hip-hop – breakdancing, graffiti, emceeing, and DJing - The Zulu Nation places emphasis on a fifth element of hip-hop being knowledge. Bambaataa and members viewed knowledge to the link that connects the other elements together to form hip-hop culture. Without knowledge, an individual would not be able to be a respectable emcee, effectively DJ, constructively tag graffiti, or safely breakdance. Despite the misconception that it is a religious organization, the Zulu Nation does not promote a belief structure but purely encourages the betterment of individuals from all walks of life and the environment around them. Therefore, membership to the organization is not limited to hip-hop artists, but is open to anyone who believes and aligns with the goals and purposes of the organization. Roald Savage, and three other males who were members of the Zulu Nation, accused Bambaataa of sexually molestation that occurred during the early 1980s. Respecting Bambaataa for his humanitarian efforts, the Suprme World Council of the Zulu Nation proclaimed their unwillingness to allow Bambaataa’s allegations of molestation to sully the legacy of the Universal Zulu Nation resulting in Bambaataa’s dismissal. The Universal Zulu Nation’s co-founder Amad Henderson has been named as the new leader of the organization.
