This statement was said by Franklin D Roosevelt on his first inaugural presidential speech. As my story unfurls in the following essay, one will see why I chose to start by mentioning this quote. Fear plays a role in each of our lives, mine being no exception. It is so common that it is not reflected on or given due credit in our day to day lives. I choose to reflect on the role fear has played in my life and draw a connection between it and the five agreements mentioned in the book “The Fifth Agreement – A Practical Guide To Self-Mastery” by Don Miguel Ruiz and Don Jose Ruiz.
Fear comes from three ‘sources’. They are the fear of rejection, the fear of failure and fear of the unknown.

Fear is that feeling that makes our blood run cold. But we’ve all experienced it several times. We experience it in our day to day lives. What do we fear? The unknown? Yes, certainly. Fear of the unknown is the most frightening thing to mankind. It brings home to us the fact that the future is unpredictable and that is precisely what we fear. While some of us might believe that fear is what keeps us on our toes, helps keep our guard up, it is also the best tool available for self-destruction. It shatters the one thing that is so important to us in today’s world and that is confidence.
All my life, I have been taught to ‘fear’ or keep away from elements that lead to self-destruction, such as anger, arrogance, hatred and fear itself. Based on the book “The Fifth Agreement – A Practical Guide To Self-Mastery” by Don Miguel Ruiz and Don Hose Ruiz, I shall relate to my life and the role that fear has played in it, the five agreements stated in the book. Simply put, words have the power to make or break us. It is thus important, that these words must not be misused. Or to state it more positively, we should use our words to our advantage and not against ourselves.
The book also mentions that we believe without challenging. Why is that so? We fear rejection. Fear of rejection, not just from loved ones, but also from society as a whole has ingrained in us the habit of believing without challenging. This is the first source of fear – fear of rejection.
