A discourse is a way of communicating, whereas a discourse community is a group that communicates similarly and for collective purposes. More often, a discourse community can be referred as a way of the communication within a given field, between individuals or within a group of people. Most commonly, discourse takes the form of speaking, writing, and reading, where an audience plays an essential role in the type of discourse. For example, I communicate differently when I talk to my friends than when I engage with my professors. WAW was an appropriate source to know the roles of discourse community in my routine life, which I wasn’t aware of. Many times I try to imagine what my future would be like and think about realistic conditions I might experience after graduation in my work as Chemical Engineer. Piyush Limbani is my cousin and is a Chemical Engineer working in his discourse community for over 3 years now. Piyush has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and is now in charge of designing and processing supply material something that I would be interested in doing. John Swales is well known linguist writer. Based on Swales’ “The Concept of Discourse Community”, a discourse community is characterized in six different features. These include common public goals, mechanisms of intercommunication, participatory mechanisms, utilize and hence possesses one or more genres, specific lexis, and threshold level of members. In “Identity, Authority, and Learning to write in New Workplaces”, Wardle demonstrates the Activity System Triangle to identify difficult aspects of an activity system. Wardle creates a path for the newcomers, thus, it helped view the bigger picture. She describes a new college graduate’s new workplace where the individual is failing to communicate with a community. Alan’s example relates to my interviewee in a way that Piyush fumbled with his new workplace initially as a newcomer. Piyush explained to me as he was being dragged around and wouldn’t speak up for a few weeks. He felt unsuitable and unhappy losing his authority to
