Health Professional Reflection

The field of health can be compared to an arena wherein various team members with different strengths join efforts towards a common greater goal- the well-being of the patient in all facets. Thus, it is the dynamics and ‘demographics’ of the team which yields progress; or as Hippocrates (460 BC) stated, “Forces within us are the true healers of disease.” Consequently, by reflecting on my visits to health centres and the teams of professionals that I was exposed to; an improved understanding of the multi-professional team as well as my future role herein as an emerging Integrated Health Professional (IHP) can be obtained.
Progress, as mentioned above, stems from the existence of a multi-professional team. This refers to a group of qualified

In other words, it is the manner in which my future role as a clinician is different to that of the psychologist or administrator; yet at the same time this difference enhances the roles of these professions. An example of this includes one of my roles being centred around prescribing medication. This role impacts that of the psychologist as medication can impact emotional state of the patient. Similarly, the prescribed medication that is recorded in the file of the patient that is handled by the administrator (Barr, …show more content…
Hearing this led me to think of my future qualification as a medical doctor being threatened and to a certain extent worthless. These thoughts evoked feelings of worry and insignificance. This observation led me to think of how some members of the multi-professional team are predisposed to situations which are beyond their scope of expertise. Consequently, this led me to the think of the working world being a space which is not compartmentalised into respective professions. This led me to feel scared and somewhat insecure in terms of what I was studying to become as I did not envision myself having such a broad multi-professional knowledge base. Similarly, visiting the various care facilities and being exposed to a patient with diabetes mellitus and various other medical complications made me aware of the fact that the real world is much different or dynamic in contrast to the theoretical ‘textbook world’ that I have been exposed to. Consequently, I felt surprised and quite fascinated

It was eight thirty in the morning of my first day of clinical at Cedar Creek Adaptacare. Trish, several healthcare aids, and I were gathered in the dining area assisting residents with breakfast. After offering to help I was told I could help with feeding. I introduced myself to one resident, gave her a few sips of water, and started feeding her small bites of oatmeal. She would cough after almost every mouthful of oatmeal or water so I asked a healthcare aid for help.…

However, in any profession, there are barriers that stop team members from reaching their full potential. In health care settings, there are always going to be providers that are considered a higher power. Although conflicts may arise over leadership in teamwork, a continued focus on client- centered care advances teamwork and allows for leadership in any profession (Cowell, 2013, p.327). For example, a doctor may think a nurse within the team contributes ideas that are not helpful. This happens simply because a doctor is considered higher than a nurse.…

Team charters are a method to improve communication, cooperation, and team cohesion (McDowell, Herdman, & Aaron, 2011). In health care, when a new interprofessional is forming there are many different disciplines that are brought together to be part of the team. Each practitioner has their own perception of the value they add to the team. Individual perception and attitudes can cause barriers to effective interprofessional collaboration (Sommerfeldt, 2013). When a interprofessional team forms to discuss difficult health care cases for a short duration of time, it will be important to clearly define the goals and expectation for the team.…

Patients today have many different health needs and often require more than one health care team member of a different scope of practice. It is nearly impossible for one health care team member to address all problems associated with the patients’ health issues. The interprofessional education approach also known as IPE is considered to be a collaborative approach between team members. The team members had to show respect to each other’s practice and work together to achieve the best possible care for the patient. This IPE event offered a way for the health care team members to share their skills and knowledge with each other, the patient and the family members.…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

Over the past semester I have learned a great deal from the clinical experiences I have encountered at East Pavilion and on the Sentara Norfolk General Rehabilitation floor. Through these humbling experiences, I have gained a new appreciation for the ability to perform simple day to day tasks such as bathing, dressing, and even walking on my own. These tasks I often take for granted and forget that what I consider a simple task may be a difficult or painful chore for others. As I reflect on my experiences, I have identified some similarities and differences in the experiences at both facilities.…

The significance of this experience is that this situation was one of the most challenging experiences I have encountered in my role as a Behavior Health Technician. By virtue of the patient being nonverbal and artistic, I felt incompetent and was unsure of how to help the patient, which put us both in vulnerable positions. I felt anxious as well as frustrated about not being able to help. Although, I tried to focus on the client’s needs, his behavior was too problematic. This experience challenged my personal viewpoints, my professionalism, and my values as a social worker.…
