Teachers are the without a doubt the unsung heroes of our society. They work diligently to prepare children for their future accomplishments, and truly ask for nothing in return. Today teachers are faced with a variety of issues including financial difficulties, high stress and employment concerns. One of the biggest issues in the field of early childhood education is an extremely high turnover rate for teachers, and centers are feeling the effects. From my own experience, I have seen many experienced and well educated teachers leave the field for various reasoning. In the center I was placed in for my internship, I witnessed two teachers alone leave the center to go teach at the elementary school level because they felt the pay and respect was far better. Teacher turnover affects the field of early childhood education significantly, with rates that are among the highest in the nation estimated to be between 15-30% each year (Peisner-Feinberg, 2000). Continuity of care and effectiveness in the classroom are jeopardized as a result of high turnover in early childhood programs. Some attribute the flux in high turnover to lack of job satisfaction among early childhood educators, with job stress being the main reason (Porter, 2012). In other words, teachers who are unhappy are more likely to leave their jobs.
