“Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that applies physical sciences (e.g. chemistry and physics) and life sciences (e.g. biology, microbiology and biochemistry) together with mathematics and economics to produce, transform, transport, and properly use chemicals, materials and energy (Cohen, 1996).” The field of chemical engineering is very diverse, covering areas from biotechnology to mineral processing. It would take too long to list all the products that are impacted by chemical engineers, but knowing what industries employ them may help to comprehend the scope of their work.
Chemical engineers work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, polymers, electronics, biotechnology, environmental health and safety industries, and desalination of water. Some of the important skills that chemical engineers should have are: Critical thinking, problem solving abilities, system analysis, decision-making skills, operation analysis, mathematics, and time management. Also, chemical engineers should have certain values such as creativity, independence, achievement, hygiene, and enthusiasm. Engineering is not only about being able to derive formulas to solve some problem. It is also about applying the principles you learn to solve real world problems. Therefore, engineers should have the ability to think outside of the box, which is considered to be a creative attribute. In…
