Lords controlled the knights, knights were likely to protect lords and their castles. In addition, the lords had less work than the peasants, they labored for the lord and in return they built their homes or huts near the lord's castle and were protected by the lord's knights and the peasants could not leave the land without the lord's permission (Eppery 26). Everyone in the village needed the protection of the lord, not only the peasants but the freeman also needed protection of the lord (Eppery 32-33). Furthermore, lords did not do their own work. In fact "lords controlled most of the land and earned their income from it without having to actually work it. On the other hand, peasants did the work and were subject to the will of the lord" ("social classes"). In addition, lords do not only control their land but, they also control everyone that is lower in the feudal pyramid than them. For example, farmers, the ones who own shops of some sort and even knights ( knights are the soldiers and they get rewarded). From what I said before Most of the peasants were serfs " they were bound to the lord's estate. That is they would not leave without the lord's permission". Feudalism and it's power was all given to the lord to handle and takeover to keep his village
