While reading Richard Wagamese’s book Indian Horse, many, if not all seven Grandfather Teachings were said or explained during the novel. Even though, Saul Indian Horse had a tragic beginning in life, as he grew older he became aware of what happened in his past and in many ways that made him a lot wiser. However, Wagamese showed these three Grandfather’s teachings and their importance some more than the rest of them; being love, wisdom and truth. One of the most important lessons that Saul had to learn in Wagameses’s book Indian Horse was love.…

Slavery into North America started in the eighteenth century. Steven Mintz writes, “between 9.6 and 10.8 million Africans arrived in the Americas.” The death rate of slaves at that time was about ten to twenty percent. Only a few slaves during that period had the opportunity to learn to read and write. Slavery would later become a large problem in North America and lead to what we call the Civil War.…
Being free is better than being enslaved, right? Freedom is the ultimate goal many, who are enslaved, want to obtain. At least that’s what some think who really are not enslaved and do not see the day-to-day struggle they face. There is nothing like having the independence to say and do as one pleases. Often time’s free blacks did not have that freedom and many narratives show just that.…
Olaudah Equiano’s autobiography The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano sheds an extraordinary amount of light and transparency on the institution of slavery during the 1700s, as well as, to an extent, the systems of enslavement that existed previously, both within America and in Africa. Equiano detailed his life before he was sold into slavery via the Atlantic slave trade, describing how slavery, a milder, drastically different version than what occurred in America, did exist in the region he was born, in what was called the Kingdom of Benin. Prisoners of war and adulterers, for example, were typically the ones taken into bondage, already depicting a clear distinction between Europe and Africa. To Europeans, slavery was “a purely economic…

In Richard Wagamese novel, Indian Horse, the main character Saul experiences great tragedy in his life; because of this he has to discover some coping methods to allow him to put his life problems aside and focus on the road ahead. Although all of the methods allows Saul to “let loose” there were some that worked the least, better and best. In my opinion the least effective is drinking, then came reading which was better, and finally the very best was playing hockey. Overall, playing hockey was the best coping skill for the main character because it gives him a sense of support and allows him to open himself to others by making new friends and family.…
After reading your statement regarding the aftermath of cows I to question what comes of the cow when they perspire. The veneration they provide cows I think it would be difficult to believe that they would then eat their remains. I feel as though it would be completely contradicting their entire belief. With this in mind, I do feel they would use the hide for warmth or as shelter. However, you do raise a valid question, one I would like to look into further to have a better understanding of the big…

The Hobbit and Abarat follow the Heroes Journey theme nearly to the tee. Both novels speak of adventure and transport you to a whole other world that touch your heart and will never leave you. “There is no end to that journey, only the next great voyage. We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make,” (Baker,1). The Hobbit and Abarat show a different world that has no end in sight.…
In 1789, Olaudah Equiano published his autobiography entitled, The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, the African. The purpose of the book was to aid the abolitionists in their struggle to abolish slavery. From the beginning of the book, it is apparent that the intended audience of the book are Christians. A quote from the book of Isaiah, containing “Behold, God is my salvation ,” preluded Equiano’s narrative that detailed his life, beginning with his kidnapping as a young boy in Africa, the voyage across the Atlantic to the Caribbean Islands, and his adventures travelling the world as a slave aboard one of England’s warships. In fact, Equiano’s book established a large audience among Christians and some English royalty, which is clear by the attached list of subscribers to the narrative.…
