Compare And Contrast Trifles And A Doll's House

Early in the 1800s, women were considered to be second-hand citizens. Women were expected to be devoted only to their husbands, their children and house chores. In the 1900s women had some type of employment but they were limited to only work as teachers, nurses or secretaries. The feminist movement of the 1960s and '70s originally focused on dismantling workplace inequality, such as denial of access to better jobs and salary inequity, via anti-discrimination law. In the dramas Trifles and in A Doll’s house, the women were both centered on marriages that were dominated by a man society. The women had to take every abuse from their husbands, they had to live up to the social expectations, and they couldn’t go against their husbands words. Both of these feminist characters had to take steps to address the control exerted over them, but the actions they took are very different and they were both from a different social status. In Trifles the women had taken their own same sex side when the county attorney and the officer had been saying how Mrs. Wrights house was dirty and this is illustrated when the county officer was in the kitchen of Mrs. Wrights and washed his hand and when he was going to dry them he says “Dirty towels! Not much of a housekeeper, would you say ladies? (669). The ladies after this statement automatically take sides as if they were trying to have power and Mrs. Hale states “Those towels get dirty quick . Men’s hands aren’t always as clean as they might be” and this is significant because Mrs. Hale in a way feels how the men are just thinking less of women since the house was not clean to the standards of society. Mrs. Wright had to always have her house clean and take care of her family if she didn’t want to be judged just like the county attorneys judged
