I believe the federal government should repeal the ban on marijuana. “The war on drugs is responsible for many casualties, but the criminalization of marijuana has been the most destructive part of that war...” It’s been over 40 years since congress passed the current ban on marijuana, The Controlled Substance Act. This act placed marijuana alongside heroine and cocaine in the most restrictive category, Schedule 1. However, before getting into why marijuana should be taken off this list, I’d like to explain how a harmless substance was deemed so dangerous in the first place.
After the Mexican Revolution, the Untied States had an influx of immigration from Mexico in the early 1900s. These new citizens brought with them their native language and customs, one of these customs being the use of “marijuana” as a medicine and relaxant. In efforts to limit the number of Mexican immigrants, El Paso, Texas wanted to have a reason to search, detain, and deport immigrants. Inspired by San Francisco outlawing opium decades earlier in order to control Chinese immigrants - they saw marijuana as the perfect excuse. Even though, this substance already had a long history in the United States, people didn’t realize what immigrants called “marijuana” was the same as what was known in the U.S. as “cannabis”, an ingredient in almost all medicines available at the time.
