One of the characters is Janine. Janine also serves the role of a Handmaid, Offred met Janine when they were at the Red Center. The Red Center is where they train the Handmaids for their duty to conceive. Offred observes Janine with her large belly when she is doing her ordinary shopping. Later on in the novel, we discover that “That is how Ofwarren did it” (Atwood 205). Janine got pregnant from a doctor, not her Commander which is completely against the laws of Gilead. Many women try to conceive this way because their Commander cannot have kids anymore due to their age, it is forbidden to say something like this. Only The Handmaids are unable to conceive, as a result, many of the Handmaids try to conceive every way they can. Nick is another character. He has the role of a Guardian, he serves the Commander of Offred and his wife Serena Joy. Nick later on in the novel becomes Offred’s lover. After Serena Joy offers Offred to get pregnant by Nick, she arranges things so they can be alone. In their time together, Nick informs Offred that there should be “No romance”(Atwood 262). The colonies is an awful place to be in, your skin starts peeling due to the radiation that is there. The maximum you could live in this place is three days. They men usually get hanged when they break any law or get captured by the Eyes. In the beginning of the novel, there are “six more bodies hanging, by the neck”(Atwood 32). This is what they call the Men’s Salvaging, they hang their bodies on a wall so the people that pass by can see them. This is used to demonstrate what happens to the people that do not follow the law. The men were hanged because they performed abortions. In the novel, there are characters that prefer to die “She hanged herself”(Atwood 285). At the end of the story, there is characters that are against the law, Ofglen was one of them. She also served the role of a Handmaid, she had her own people, the passcode was “Mayday”.
