Similar to a child in a vulnerable position, I was impotent when doctor's told me I was almost paralyzed. My extremities would have been motionless and my recovery would have taken an innumerable amount of effort through the assistance I would have needed trying to cope with life. From this realization, I experienced a change in my perspective, and I experienced a change in my understanding of humanity. I did not have to face the ignorance I felt or the simple life I cherished anymore. Losing my innocence made me realize that this concept not only affects myself but that it affects a cohort of the population. It allows a person to obtain wisdom and to transform himself or herself into a cultivated individual.

Hazel Grace has cancer, which causes her to have depression and loneliness. However, her mother encourages her to join a support group for kids with illnesses and disabilities. At the support group, she meets Augustus Waters. Augustus Waters is a charming 17-year-old who has an amputated leg. Hazel introduces Augustus to her favorite novel, An Imperial Affliction. He arranges for Hazel and himself to meet the reclusive author of the novel. Augustus wants Hazel to get her questions about the end of the novel answered. He uses his only wish, granted by a cancer organization, on a trip to Amsterdam. When they arrive in Amsterdam at the house of the author, he asks them to leave. August tells Hazel that his cancer has returned, and they both return home. Hazel promises to stay by Augustus' side as he slowly becomes weak. When Augustus dies, Hazel finds comfort in a letter Augustus wrote to Peter Van Houten, the author of an Imperial Affliction, about
