Surviving the winter is a thought constantly stuck in the fathers mind.As they are following the road to south in an effort to survive the winter, they stop by a very vast house. The father is not sure if he should go in or not, since he did not know what to expect when they go inside. His son is very tired since their food and water supply is running short. After several days of walking, with a limited supply of food and water, they become tired . Running into these men and women almost kills them. They waited couple of hours for these people to leave. Essentially, they are not in a position for gathering any supplies, which makes them starve more. We know this impacted them because the father is already thinking about how to kill his son when the time comes, if he can not protect him anymore: “ Can you do it? When the time comes? When the time comes there will be no time. Now is the time. Curse God and die. What if it doesnt fire? It has to fire. What if it doesnt fire? Could you crush that beloved skull with a rock?” ( McCarthy, pg. 114).
