The food industry is the instigator to the unhealthy eating habits of Americans. They produce, permit and miseducate the masses about the food products being marketed to us. This industry allows companies to use sneaky marketing tactics. One example, is by labeling products as “natural” or “healthy” ; posing that the product is of nutritional value which is appealing to consumers on an ethical level. In reality, the descriptions, “natural” or “healthy” have no value at all and the consumer is being completely misled. Over a period of eating poorly, that same consumer may end up being diagnosed with a health condition. In addition, Big pharma opens their arms to Americans that have developed cardiovascular conditions, diabetes and etcetera. America is well-known to other countries by our fast-food and obesity rates, we have “raised awareness to the obesity problems and linked to the food system” (340 Pollan). In addition, food goes hand in hand with health; which is why I say that the food and pharmaceutical industry are partners in crime. These corporations are focused on building a higher empire on the disease ridden consumers despite “its cost to public health” (341 Pollan). In order to sell pharmaceuticals, you need to have a patient that is ill. To sell those same pharmaceuticals for a longer period of time, the patient cannot be cured and needs to have a long-term illness. Which means more money for the pharmaceutical industry. The patient is no longer a patient, they are a customer. If the food industry were to produce and regulate legitimate healthy options, we would see a thriving society with less health concerns. America has forgotten the power that food holds with destroying and building your health because we are told that these magical chemically engineered pills can help us, when they don’t. If they did, why do taking some medications pose a risk to contracting another health condition? Why is the pharmaceutical industry making so much money but is only producing products that can sedate but not cure illnesses?
