We decided to learn more about an Indianapolis based sports radio station, 1070 “the Fan”. To get a more in-depth perspective we interviewed John Griffin who is the() to get a better understanding of how the business functions.
One of the Fan’s biggest strengths comes from its affiliation with ESPN. This association gives the Fan a national presence to stand above its competitors. They are able to air programs such as Mike and Mike in the Morning that draws in viewers who might not have tuned in without that program. This partnership helps the Fan increase its presence because of all the people that are directed to this station because of the name ESPN adds on. New listeners tune in for Mike and Mike and stay to listen to the Fan’s original

Louis and Indianapolis. Emmis has experience in both small and large markets and is the 9th largest publically traded radio portfolio in the United States (Emmis website). The management has significant experience and expertise which is a unique advantage of the Fan. Emmis is also innovating and trying to pioneer new techniques to gain viewership. A new innovation they are working on involves putting radio transmitters in phones. This will make radio accessible anywhere and will help radio compete with the rapid expansion of the internet. Emmis is also based in Indianapolis which puts it even closer to top management. While the Fan does have many great strengths, there are some weaknesses as …show more content…
Digital trends are changing the way people consume content. People who are very busy enjoy being able to listen to broadcasts when they have free time. Broadcast recordings are becoming a popular way for people to consume radio. Radio channels don’t just have to compete with other radio channels now either. The “Don Hurta Rule” is exemplified by ESPN in the fact that they are always striving for growth and upholding their mission statement. As I have read through the text, one constant thing has remained in my mind. ESPN is always wanting to grow their brand, whether it be through acquisitions or broadening its services. ESPN is always willing to take a chance, and make it happen. Their superior leadership at the top end of the company allows them to take risks and grow the company.…

Marketers play an important role when it comes to when fans/consumers have the ability to create, communicate, and publish. Part of that role stems from catering to this new generation of consumers while the other part of that role includes quality control and target marketing. The main job of marketers is to appeal to the fans/consumers, and when they have the ability to create, communicate and publish, marketers must create and advertise product that will allow the consumers to do so. This includes possibilities such as interactive websites, live events, and other events that can involve the fan/consumer community. This is important to encourage fans/consumers to spread the work of an artist.…

For my Mad Men essay and presentation I will be focusing on the fan theory that the Chevy account in season 6 and 7 is an allegory for the Vietnam War. The theory is that the creators of the show used the Chevy account, which is incredibly taxing to the agency and ultimately insurmountable, to represent the very unpopular Vietnam War. I will be exploring whether or not the theory has any merit. I will then make an argument for one side or the other. On one hand, fan theories are mere coincidences tied together by fans that have way too much time on their hands.…

“My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante and “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” by Lisa See are bildungsroman novels which follow the journeys of two young girls stuck in the lower class of patriarchal societies, who both attempt to free themselves from their confinements and achieve self-actualisation. Abraham Maslow defines self-actualisation as “the desire for self-fulfilment, namely the tendency for him (the individual) to become actualised in what he is potentially.” In his theory proposed in his 1943 paper, “A Theory Of Human Motivation”, “Maslow states that most people are motivated to seek improvements in their lives” and “The deficiency of basic needs are said to motivate people when they are unmet.” Both novels reflect an idea congruent…

TiVo was a service that gives consumers the ability to choose what to watch and when to watch. It was also the first digital video recorder, and put the control into the consumers’ hands instead of the networkers’. However, TiVo is best suited for networkers, as TiVo failed to market towards consumers and receive much recognition; instead, TiVo successfully partnered with networks to monitor consumer watch patterns and properly deliver ads and content. To consumers, TiVo was a liberating device that gave them control over which shows they wanted to watch and when they wanted to watch.…

Live tweeting is defined as the act of posting commentary about an event on Twitter while the event is taking place. While I have sporadically engaged in live tweeting for numerous single events such as the Grammy’s or the MET Gala before, I never truly realized how much dedication it takes for an individual to tune into a show week-to-week and live tweet their commentary. For this television challenge experience, I chose to delve deep into The CW’s Riverdale Twitter fandom and live tweet my immediate reactions as the show aired. For this experience, I live tweeted under the account @tvaddictperson. With my phone in my hands and television tuned into The CW in front of me, I became fully engaged in a second screen viewing experience.…

The sports talk radio program I decided to listen to was ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption from 2/26/16. This program features hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon, both well-known figures in the sports world who have been hosting PTI since 2001. I have listened and watched PTI before, and one of the reasons it is so great is because they condense a lot of sports talk into a short amount of time. On weekdays, it airs on ESPN at 5:30 pm and only runs for a half an hour. It is a perfect time to watch, as you can listen to some funny sports debate in the time right before dinner, and it is only half an hour instead of a full hour.…
