The Family In Daniel's Story By Carol Matas

During WWII, life for many people was sad and depressing. This was only partially true for Daniel’s family at one point in time. In the novel Daniel’s Story, written by Carol Matas, Daniel was a fictional holocaust survivor. He found happiness through this dreary time in history as well as the rest of his family. The family consists of Daniel, his mother and father, and his sister Erika. The family lived in a Jewish ghetto that was located in Lodz, Poland. In the ghetto, the family was surrounded by sickness and death, but they found happiness at one point in time. The family’s happiness coheases with the overall theme of the story in many ways. She was a new friend that Daniel’s sister, Erika, had made. When he first laid eyes on her, Daniel was attracted. For example, in the text, Matas stated, “Two emotions were vying for dominance- shame and love. The shame was natural- not many fifteen-year-olds like to be caught in their underwear picking lice out of their clothes. Love. Well, that I can’t explain.” (Matas 52). This quote demonstrates that Daniel was immediately attracted to Rosa, since he explained that love was dominating over him. Once Daniel felt the ‘love’ for Rosa, he became entranced and he was happy to meet her. In fact, if it wasn’t for Rosa, no one in the house would feel the same sense of happiness and
