The fall of the Ming Dynasty in 1644 gave birth to the new empire known as the Qing Empire. The Qing brought about big change in all of the lands of China. The emperor, Yongzheng, was the third emperor to rule under the Qing Empire. Yongzheng quickly became an empire who sought a huge amount of power. He became to be known as a very autocratic emperor as the time passed by. Yongzheng worked hard to have complete control of all his officials and have full control of his people’s views and morals throughout the entire land of his empire, and he intended to keep it that way.

As time passed by and his men were finally able to capture the most wanted Mr. JIng Yongzheng immediately wanted him transferred, so he can talk to him in person. Yongzheng has decided that he will not punish Zeng Jing, but instead he will educate him. Jonathan Spence states, “He instructs them to begin briefing Zeng Jing on the realities of government” (page 116). Yongzheng decides that education will be his road to redemption. Zeng Jing’s path to treason was solely based on the idea that General Yue disliked Yongzheng, and the emperor knew that, so he asked Hangyilu to find all reports between himself and Yue that show Yongzheng acting as a sincere and nice emperor towards general Yue. Hangyilu was then to give the reports to Mr. Jing in order for himself to view official documents of the great relationship that Yue and Yongzheng have. By doing this Yongzheng had successfully brainwashed Zeng JIng into believing that he always treated Yue with special respect, therefore; Zeng Jing thought that Yue and Yongzheng disliked each other and was replaced with the idea that they both of them had a very close connection.
