Setting is often one of the most important factors in literary works. You just simply cannot have a story or movie without someplace for it to take place at. The setting is really shown as the main point in two stories. The first is “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe. IN this story a man arrives at an old friend's house and his life will be forever changed. however, the second story which is “Where is Here” by Joyce Carol Oates, a man returns to his childhood home in an unsettling way. The exposition is the first stop on the journey through the plot of a story. During this first stop at the exposition, the reader learns background information, characters, time, and most importantly setting. On page 293, Edgar Allan Poe expresses, “ I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of evening drew on, within view of the House of Usher.” Without the setting, the exposition would be left unfinished and the story would have no point. The setting in this story is a childhood house. Everyone has had a childhood house, this allows them to really relate and put themselves into the story. The more the reader gets attached the better reaction they will get. Oates states on page 325, “For years they had lived without incident in their house in a quiet residential neighborhood when, one November evening at dusk, the doorbell rang,” The reader feels like they are right there in the story with the characters. Clearly, the setting helps connect the reader to the
