It spanned 10 years and five U.S. presidents were involved. It began in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy sent military advisories to aid South Vietnam. Just like in the Korean Peninsula, Vietnam was divided north and south also. The north was Communist and the south was Democratic. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, his Vice President, Lyndon Johnson, took over. He asked Congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. It stated that it gave the president full war time powers without declaring war. This also makes the Vietnam War not a war, but a “police action”. The United States was going to fight two different North Vietnamese sides. The first one was the North Vietnamese Army. They were a uniformed army that was similar to other armies. The other army was the Viet Cong. This was ununiformed militia fought on the behalf of North Vietnam. The would hide in villages, set up booby traps and use guerilla warfare. They dressed in normal attire and blended in with the villagers. Ths made it extremely difficult for the United States military to find these soldiers. Another challenge that made the war difficult was the terrain of Vietnam. Very dense jungles and hot an humid climate made it even harder for the war against North Vietnam. The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an example of the fight for power in the United States’ backyard. The Invasion was an example of how far the United States would go to remain in power in North America. This means it was acceptable for the C.I.A. to plan and train Cuban exiles to help overthrow the Communist rule. During this time in the Cold War, anything was an acceptable to remain in power.
