The Demise of Richard Nixon’s Presidency In 1974, Republican President, Richard Nixon was forced to resign from office due to his involvement in the Watergate scandal. The scandal was a major upset to the Republican party causing the first resignation from a president and seven of his administrators to be arrested for their participation. The reason for the arrest and resignation was a cause of the Republicans conspiring to listen in on the Democratic party to give them an advantage in the 1972 Presidential election. During Nixon’s time in the office he had many accomplishments such as the Nixon Doctrine, ending the Vietnam War, improving international relations with the U.S.S.R., and being the first president to attend launching of a manned space flight. Then, military analyst, Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers, which traced felonious history of America’s involvement in Vietnam. Nixon seeked revenge on Ellsberg and wished to win the election easier than the first time; so he hired burglars to gather information that could prove useful in winning the 1972 election. “The men involved broke into the Democratic National Committee’s offices at Watergate and stole two cameras, several dozen rolls of film, a few thousand dollars in cash, and wiretapping equipment to spy on the politics and sabotage their campaign plans” (Purpose of the break-in n.d. paragraph 6). They were caught when “security guard, Frank Wills, noticed tape covering the latch of locks on several doorways in the Watergate complex, allowing them to close without locking, so he called the police” (Watergate Scandal Timeline n.d. paragraph
