Benedick Love Beatrice Analysis

Love is always a major component of a Shakespearean comedy. It is what these comedies are centered around. The lovers in this play do fall in love in the end and all is well, but do they really fall in love? The love between Benedick and Beatrice was conceived through the deception of their friends, therefore it was very hollow and very much based on the fact that their friends wanted them together. Claudio’s love for Hero is very shallow, but Hero’s love remains constant. Benedick and Beatrice’s relationship is based off from the fact that they initially hated each other, and their friends thought it would be just perfect if they could get their two friends that despised each other very much to be together in love. They say that Hero is worried about Beatrice’s health because Benedick would not be up for the challenge of loving Beatrice. Benedick only loves Beatrice because he believes from what he heard, that Beatrice loves him. On the other side of the spectrum, Beatrice, only loves Benedick because she overheard Ursula and Hero talking about how Beatrice is too harsh on her suitors because she has too much pride. Hero praises Benedick saying,”Signor Benedick...Goes formost in report through Italy.” (3.1.95-97). Beatrice promises to get rid of her bad attitude only because Benedick likes her. The love between Benedick and Beatrice is conditional. Benedick only loves Beatrice because she loves him and vice versa. Real love is not conditional. If their love was legitimate, Benedick would love Beatrice because he really loves her, and Benedick would love Beatrice because she really loves him. Benedick and Beatrice had hated each other for years before they fell in love. They taunted each other finding imperfections in each other. They have always had a relationship; earlier in the story, one of mutual hatred, in the end they had a relationship of mutual respect. On the other hand, Claudio and Hero had never really interacted with each other until Claudio proposed that he would marry her on the following day. Claudio’s relationship was the status quo for marriages, he took Hero for a wife not only for her beauty, but also because her father, Leonato was very wealthy. Benedick and Beatrice had a progressive relationship. Beatrice and Benedick are both very good with their words. They both were very witty and were equally challenged when it came to verbal sparring. In contrast to the relationship between Claudio and Hero, Beatrice and Benedick had a more wholesome
