Escaping Salem, as the title states, recounts the events surrounding witch trials outside of the infamous Salem, Massachusetts. Godbeer takes us to the same time period, but a different location Stamford, Connecticut, where a witch hunt is taking place. This book tells us how this witch hunt “took a very different course from the panic in Massachusetts” (Godbeer 7). In his book, Godbeer presents the readers with a sense of how witchcraft was understood and dealt with in the seventeenth century New England colonies. Before reading this book, I have always had the impression that the Salem witch trials were not just limited to that one area and not the only ones in the whole of American history, but the Salem witch trials are almost certainly…

History is a complicated subject. It has stories full of uplifting and courageous events: wars fought and won, inspiring people who helped to shape the world. Yet, as there are these righteous events, so must there be the dark, gruesome, and depressing stories. Every place has its dark moment; the time in its history that the people would rather the world simply forget about. In a little town in Massachusetts, the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 were a perfect example of such a dark time.…

The wicked events that took place in Salem, Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693 are perhaps the most well known instances of mass hysteria in the United States, yet the most mysterious. In her most recent book, The Witches: Salem, 1692, historian Stacy Schiff gives an inside look into the world of the puritans, using primary sources and accounts of specific cases during the Salem Witch Trials. Schiff’s writing guides readers through early Salem, visiting the homes of witchcraft victims, the forests where witches supposedly made deals with the devil, and the courtroom where hundreds were accused. I was attracted to this book because I had always been curious about the specifics behind the Salem Witch Trials. Schiff provides some answers as to…

What started as curious young girls playing with the idea of mysticism quickly escalated into one of the most infamous trials in United States history. The puritan community of Salem has become married to notions of hysteria, mystery, and dark magic. However, through the investigation of Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum in their book Salem Possessed: The Social Origins of Witchcraft, the roots of the trials are revealed to be community based. If the events of the witch-trials are seen as symptoms for socio-economic tensions between the Salem Town and Salem Village, a clearer picture begins to form of the events’ true motivation. By focusing on the divisions in the area within the set up of the town, factions within the village, and WHATEVER…

In the town of Salem, Massachusetts there has been lots of accusations about witchcraft and thought to be good Puritan people worshiping the devil. It has all started with a group of girls dancing around a fire in the woods and getting found by Rev. Parris. This finding has led to lots of people in the town pointing fingers at one another. As a result of the finger pointing, people have been hung for not pleading guilty to a crime they have not committed. The person that is to blame for the hangings in our town of Salem is Abigail Williams, the niece of Parris.…

Foremost, Rebecca was a woman of utmost prestige in following God’s path. Through the restless evil in people’s heart, a town blinded by the devil created a suitable environment for my wife to be hanged. Although Rebecca was accused by Goody Putnam, Abigail William’s selfish and mindless actions released the devil’s curtain onto the stage of Salem. With jealously and hate in her heart, Abigail created a setting to impose her motivation as well as allowing others to do the same. Based on my evaluation, Abigail Williams must be convicted guilty for lying under the oath of court, manipulation of the people's’ hearts, and the eventual killing of twenty innocent people in Salem.…

People got bored and at the time young girls were forbidden to act out or express themselves, it’s not hard to see why they were delighted by the attention given to their “bewitching”. Of course many factors played a part in the actions of the “afflicted girls”, but it’s surprising to think that the imaginations of these girls sent hysteria throughout Salem. Though the girls may have prompted the hunt, the adults set it in…

To numerous people, what others believe is true of them is greater than their actual character. Such is the case for several characters within Miller’s The Crucible. Within the text, there are several instances where characters will tell lies to preserve their reputations or to save their own lives, potentially endangering others. Even though confessions to crimes they did not commit could tarnish their reputation, they realize they would never be able to amend a reputation from the grave. For this reason, several characters in Miller’s The Crucible, including John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren, are willing to take several different although equally drastic measures to protect their own name.…
