The Fairchilds In Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding

Introduction- In the novel Delta Wedding, Welty displays the ideal that the Fairchild’s are a close-knit family, but even a family as close as the Fairchilds, there are still outcasts. Not only are there outcasts, there are enemies and the saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer,maybe that is what the Fairchilds are doing.
Thesis- Welty cements the Fairchilds are a traditional Delta family, they continue to grow with new members being added, every member
Summary- Eudora Welty begins the novel with a small girl moving to her aunt’s and uncle’s house because her mother passed away. While reuniting with her family, Laura struggles with fitting into the Fairchilds as others do in the novel. The family is a very close-knitted family that does not like change. When she got there, “Poor Laura little motherless girl,” they would all run out and say” (1).
Explanation- Laura did not claim the Fairchild’s as her own people, instead she claimed them to be “her mother’s people”. Laura did not feel accepted into the family, now that her mother is gone, it is like the Fairchild’s are taking Laura in as the pity her. Laura is a known outcast in her family now.
V. Second body paragraph Topic Sentence- Dabney’s marriage to Troy is no secret in the novel, Delta Wedding, it is also very well known that Dabney’s family does not want Dabney to marry this man, that is beneath her social status. Quote- “Surely hopes she be happy wid dat high-ridin’ low-born Mr.Troy”(172)
Explanation- In the novel it is well known that Troy is a lower class compared to Dabney and her family. The Fairchild’s do not think Troy is an acceptable suitor for her, but they are managing to let Dabney marry him. He will be an outcast in her family considering they do not fancy him.
