Washington emphasized the importance of unity when he said, “The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you. It is justly so, for it is a main pillar in the edifice of your real independence, the support of your tranquility at home, your peace abroad; of your safety; of your prosperity; of that very liberty which you so highly prize.” This quote conveys the importance of cooperation in the government as it draws attention to the base it sets for other freedoms that the American people enjoy. He valued the unity of the nation and praised its ability to bring peace. The solidarity of America wasn’t wielded as a weapon to tear people apart, instead it is used to create better living conditions and success for all. This point is further reiterated when Washington uses sentences such as “I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat in which I promise myself to realize, without alloy, the sweet enjoyment of partaking, in the midst of my fellow-citizens…” and “...the happy reward, as I trust, of our mutual cares, labors, and dangers.” to end his speech. Using words like “fellow-citizens” and “mutual cares” represents how he stepped down to join his citizens.
