Failure in science is frequent and unavoidable. We learn about the scientific method and the importance of observation, hypothesis, and experiment so that we can fix our mistakes if our hypothesis was failed. It has even been said that the point of science is to make as many mistakes as possible as fast as possible. The lessons we take from the obstacles we encounter can be crucial to later success. An example of a scientist who made mistakes that were made into a later success was Alexander Graham Bell. However, he still has inventions that were very successful, such as the telephone.
A failure that Alexander Graham Bell faced was the invention of the metal detector. After the assassination …show more content…
Gerhard Fisher found the first portable metal detector called The Fisher Metal Detector. Even though Alexander wasn’t the one who made it, he was still given credit for it since his unsuccessful metal detector was used as a prototype. According to https://www.metaldetector. com/learn/metal-detector-history/history-of-the-metal-detector, “Although the first metal detector didn’t help save the 20th President of the United States, the machine Alexander Graham Bell made was a viable metal detector and it went on to be the prototype for which all other metal detectors from that time forward have been …show more content…
For example, he accomplished his invention of the telephone, and it changed the way people communicate forever. Because of his invention of the telephone, inventors have gone on to continue to build off of his invention or to make innovations by making cell phones or iPhones. Today, people use it everywhere. They use it at home or for school, and even for businesses. According to the cite http://courses.educ.ubc.ca/et ec540/Sept04/kangd/Researchproject/inventionoftelephone.htm, it states, “The telephone is an all purpose tool. It is used in the home, business and in education. It is a source of entertainment and a vital resource to the illiterate as well as the academic elite.” Another one of his ideas that failed is still considered an accomplishment because even though he did not successfully make the metal detector, someone else did because of him. Today, you can see that metal detectors are used in some schools and they are used in airports. Overall, Alexander Graham Bell’s failures and accomplishments both impact the world today and back then.
Overall, I learned that Alexander Graham Bell may have failed on the metal detector, however, he still greatly impacted other people to build off of his ideas of building a metal detector. Today, it can be seen that metal detectors are quite a success. This can be related to one of the 8 keys of excellence “Failure
