In light of Secretary of Defense Aston Carter’s recent announcement that all combat military occupational specialties will open to women, I feel compelled to speak on this controversial subject. In this paper I will talk about both sides of the argument including factors of the effects of gender integration in combat units and provide reasons that justify predictions that people have made. The marines pride themselves upon this aspect. If repetitive training ensures that predictable physical response during combat discipline ensures mental response. The theory of discipline is to get in habit and do it flawless. Wherever you begin in your military careen discipline is placed upon you from boot camp at Pendleton to officer school training. Discipline starts with simple exercises that promote appearance, uniform, exercises etc. These exercises become the one’s you mostly know until discipline is increased. I believe that day-to-day troops life in combat would become less disciplined because the dynamic created by a gender-integrated unit would result in lessening the focus on the tasks. To some type of degree discipline will be lost to some extent, which isn’t acceptable in any of the branches of the military.

The marine is introduced to authority figures that will control his military life. A major divide is between ‘boots’ and ‘seniors’ the second divide is between those who have combat experience and those who don’t. A boot is someone who hasn’t been on deployment. It creates a bond with the members of the same group. The boots are the lower class and treated that way, they know they all have suffered the same way which makes them part of a brotherhood despite skin color, sexual orientation and religious views.
