One federal law enforcement agency that I researched was the Federal Bureau of Investigations , known as the FBI. The FBI was created on July , 26, 1908. The FBI was first known as the Bureau of Investigations, this agency did not get the name FBI, until 1935. The first employees for the FBI was 10 former secret service agents they were hired by the department of justice. By 1909, this federal law agency had 34 agents. In 1917, J. Edgar Hoover joined the FBI. During his time in the agency, he set up a card index system. This system listed every radical leader, organization, and publication in the United States. In 1924, he was then made director of the FBI. He was the first director for the FBI. While, director he reconstructed and expanded …show more content…
This agency also enforces law the criminal laws of the U.S. The FBI also gathers, collects, and evaluates information of criminal acts. This federal agency finds criminals and arrest them for violating the law. The FBI protects civil rights, they also combat several crimes like: white collar crimes , significant violent crimes, and public corruption. The structure of the FBI is that there is 5 branches. The director of the FBI is Christopher Wray. He has been in charge since 2017. One branch of the agency, is the criminal , cyber , response, and services branch. Then there is the national security branch, the intelligence branch, the science and technology branch , the information and technology branch and lastly, the human resources branch. The SBI was established in 1937 but began operation on September 1, 1938. Frederick C. Handy was the first director of North Carolina’s state bureau of investigation. The SBI was divided into three units they were, criminal statistics, identifications , and investigations. This state law enforcement agency was only given $25,622 to work. The SBI’s first agent was a former sheriff from McDowell county , his name was Oscar Adkins. In 1940, this agency bought their first lie detector test to help with their work. In 1943, the agency published a booklet that had a list of people who were wanted, violated parole, stole property, and listed the people who were missing. The SBI created the first crime lab in the nation, known as the SBI technical laboratory, by the 1956, this lab had 66,768 examinations done. As of 1956, the agency had 32 agents, they hired Clarence Gooche in 1969 , he was the first African American agent. The first female agent to be hired was in 1971, her name is Laura Ward. A mobile crime lab was then added to the SBI. Some significant changes occurred in the mid 1980’s with the SBI. The first change occured in 1985 when the police information network and SBI’s identification section merged and became the division of criminal information.
