Orca whales also known as killer whales are the largest of the dolphin family. Orcas are also one of the world’s most powerful predators. Sailors gave orcas the name asesina ballenas or “whale killer”, but eventually it was flipped around to be killer whale. Orcas have been targeted for live capture for places like Sea World for a long time. It is a proven fact that orca whales are better off in the wild than in captivity. They live longer, are more social, and are less violent towards humans.
Orcas are found in all of the world’s oceans. They mostly live where the water is cold but will live anywhere from the Arctic areas right up to the equator. This range makes orcas the most widespread of all sea creatures. With shiny black backs, and bright white bellies and eye patch, orcas are easily distinguished from other marine mammals. Killer whales are one of the largest predators. A male can grow to be 32 feet in length while females are slightly smaller at 28 feet. Adult males can weigh up to 22,000 pounds and females get to be around 16,500 pounds. Orcas in the wild are known to live 50 to 100 years. But most orcas in captivity don’t live longer than 20 to 30 years.
There are believed to be three kinds of pods: transient, resident, and offshore. Transient pods are always on the move searching for different food sources. Resident pods usually stay in one area near the shore, while offshore orcas rather be in the open waters. Currently, scientists aren’t sure as to why there…
