Background Although people have been using the internet to connect with others since the early 1980s, it is only in the last decade that social networking services have proliferated and their use has become a widespread practice – particularly amongst young people (Johnson, et al., 2009). With the increase of technology used for communicating with others and the popularity of the Internet, “Social Networking” has become an activity that is done primarily on the Internet, with sites like Myspace, Facebook, Bebo, Friendster, and Xanga (Coyle et al., 2008). The explosive growth of social networking sites over the recent years has taken the world by storm. Teenagers are considered the most prolific users of online social networking sites and according to a report by Common Sense Media, 75 percent of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites. Based on the findings of several research studies, it evident that online social network sites are extremely influential in the lives of youth who are spending a significant amount of their on these sites. The impact on their population is noteworthy, it is transforming the way they communicate and interact with the world. As a result, questions and controversies arise concerning the relationship between social networking site use and adolescents. More specifically, many of these contentious questions ask what kinds of effects these technologies have on youth development.
