In Bill Delaney’s article from The Explicator, vol 64, “Poe’s THE CASK OF AMONTILLADO” he describes the ways Montresor's revenge has affected the character emotionally. Delaney discusses that by the end of his act of revenge Montresor is no longer mad at Fortunato but instead pities him. Even comparing how Montresor feels to when Octavius cries upon learning of the death of Antony in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra claiming that “Once (Montresor) had obtained satisfaction, he could feel compassion for his victim” (Delaney). He points out that even though not carrying out his act of vengeance would make Montresor even angrier than he already was, he continuously refers to Fortunato as his “poor friend” and suggested repeatedly that they

The story begins with the narrator, Montresor, expressing his desire to revenge himself upon Fortunato for a “thousand injuries” (Poe 714), and this immediately gives the reader the impression that the narrator is at least slightly mentally unhinged. The scene is set during a carnival in a time period some fifty years prior to Montresor’s current retelling, which applies to Romanticism as the setting is somewhat obscure and the time is not current. The fact that Montresor buries Fortunato alive is extremely shocking to the reader, as is Montresor’s apparent cold-heartedness and his unapologetic manner. Montresor’s actions, although premeditated, seem dominated by his emotions of hatred toward his victim, and not by any amount of logic or…

As stated Montresor was bullied and teased by Fortunato, a jokester, until he went too far. Although, these two motives are far from similar they both could use the same advice, “ A wrong is unredressed when retribution is taken upon the redresser. (Cask...P1)” This quote represents and symbolizes the nonessential use of murder for an unjustified murder. It proves that a problem is not fixed when extreme measures are taken upon the wrongdoer.…

Is protecting the family reputation a valid motive to commit murder? In the story The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe, it begins and ends with a recounting of a faithful night where Fortunato is subsequently murdered by Montresor for “The thousand injuries caused by Fortunato” (Peters 31). The recounting of this story could be seen as someone’s last confession before dying and entering the house of the lord. Interestingly, during the end of Montresor’s closing statement, he states “For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them” (Peters 37).This closing statement leads me to agree with Hirsch when he states “On his death bed he can finally make the deed known with impunity, and in making it known, he finally completes his act…

Montresor does not consider himself a despicable man as he notes “You, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe, para. 1). However, because his patience has already run thin he can’t bear the abuse anymore. The following lines illustrate this idea, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe, para. 1). It seems to me that Montresor is a good man who has been enduring the abuse of Fortunato for an extensive time. After reaching his limit, Montresor believes that he is entitled to carry out revenge without facing punishment since he has the worthy purpose of restoring fairness.…

During his recall of events he mentions a conversation between himself and Fortunato about his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” which translates into “No one provokes me with impunity”. (167). Montresor was raised with the belief that anyone who provokes him must be punished; therefore, Montresor is able to rationalize that his act of revenge is the only answer to the insults he received by Fortunato. Growing up in a family that preached and lived by its motto, it is reasonable to say that Montresor knows no other way of handling this situation. The family motto contributes to Montresor’s justification that retribution must…
