Reflection On Being A Leader

Great Essays
I am an RA at Northern Kentucky University. As an RA, I help students transition to college and help them understand how to live on their own away from parents. It is my duty to enforce University Housing policy- to ensure the safety of students plus maintain a positive learning environment. As an RA, I have developed a unique set of skills because I get to work with students to ensure they are receiving a full well rounded college experience while enforcing rules that some tend to break. This can be challenging because I still have to live with them unlike police; for example, they get to go home after they interact with someone so they don’t have to deal with it when their job is over. I am going to discuss how my supervisors maintain …show more content…
One reason my supervisors excel at being a leader is how personable and caring they are. They truly understand the pressure of being a student so they strive for us to reach our goals to be the best people we can be. So, how do they accomplish this? They do this by challenging us to improve as a student and as an adult to become better people for our communities. We have bi-weekly meetings in which I talk about life goals, class goals, and my personal life; that mean a lot to me. With these meetings it gives me a since of belonging- it makes me feel like I have a purpose and it really motivates me to improve to become a better person. I just recently went on a leadership retreat and we discussed how important it is to be a leader with a passionate heart. As a leader it is important to understand whom we are leading or we will not get the highest possible outcome from them. For example, if I don’t understand the needs of my residents how will I be able to effectively do my job to ensure that their experience is the best possible. Also, by leading this way, it will make people feel like I do when my supervisor talks with

    1. After reflecting on who or what event provided me with leadership influence I concluded there wasn’t one person or one event that has had the most effect on me to strive to become a better leader or person for that matter. Many of my past supervisors and present alike have been good and bad with more good than bad. I attempt to take pieces from each of their leadership qualities, use things I liked and stayed away from their “bad” leadership qualities I did not believe helped me grow as a leader or produce quality jobs or mission results. All the while, my own personality and beliefs intertwined with their leadership styles to make me who I am today as a leader.…

Being a leader can be very important. It takes a great amount of effort to become and stay a leader. Leaders should be able to motivate people and be able to control them to an extent. The mission of the department of Housing and Residence Life is to “provide resources and opportunities for student learning and success by collaborating to build inclusive residential communities and experiences. I remember when I first moved into the dorms, I felt completely lost. I didn’t know where my classes were, I didn’t know where to get toilet paper, and I didn’t know where to put our trash. My RA’s goal was to help put all of these at ease and to make my transition a little easier. By helping the students acknowledge all of their resources, and by helping them solve their everyday problems, Resident Assistants are a prime example of the department of Housing and Residence Life mission.…

The aspect of leadership that I need to focus most on improving is that of having the ability to balance work, school, and time with my family. I find that a great deal of the time I spend at home is spent working on schoolwork. This unbalance takes away from time that I should be spending with my husband and children and often leaves me feeling overwhelmed. Many people have the tendency to procrastinate on projects, and find them having to rush to do these tasks at the last minute. A big part of my problem is feeling that I need to complete assignments as soon as they are given.…

Throughout my high school experience, I have had the privilege of partaking in many clubs that eventually led to leadership roles. Currently I am serving in a handful of leadership positions. I am the president of Cheney High School’s Future Business Leaders of America club. This role has allowed me to lead the club in spirit competitions, chapter meetings, regional conferences, and soon, state and national conferences. After looking up to previous FBLA presidents as role models, I relish the chance to give advice to younger members and help them achieve success.…

I am seeking admission to the Region One Integrated Leadership Program because I am now pursuing a leadership role in administration to better help our educators better serve our children. I have been working as a 5th grade teacher for 7 years now and at the end of each school year I reflect on my growth as their educator and my student’s growth and their learning. As a future administrator I strongly believe that in order to achieve results one must be able to analyze student data base on their benchmark assessments, and create a plan of action to see results, and immediately convey this with their teachers. I am seeing admission into the leadership program to also learn how to effectively analyze data, identify root causes, and find a solution. I am interested on learning how to effectively manage educators so they can in return be effective in their teachings…

Over the years, I have learned there can be numerous definitions of leadership. When I was a non-rate onboard the Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell, leadership meant doing what the Chief or First Class Boatswain’s Mate said. There was no questioning the commands or giving feedback. I did what was told because of their legitimate power. When I finally went to A-school and earned a Third Class crow, I learned from my supervisor at Public Affairs Detachment San Diego that leadership was all about building relationships.…

Leaders work with people to achieve a goal, bosses order people around and do not contribute to the end goal. I believe in being a leader, working along side others to reach an ultimate goal. Not everyone was born into a situation that has easily set him or her up for success. I come from a culture of people that has had to work extremely hard to get ahead in life. Leadership is both a science and an art. Good leadership requires an accurate sense of self, a well-communicated vision, the ability to earn the trust of others and the capability to take effective action. In order to “build your house of leadership” your actions must inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more. (Duren, Lec. 2). Throughout the semester, I have learned that some of the five Kouzes and Posner leadership practices in The Leadership Challenge come naturally to me while others do not.…

Being a leader is not an easy job. You have to put everybody before yourself. Leadership is more than just leading people in the right direction. Being leader doesn’t mean being the boss of everybody, that’s a completely different thing. Leading is actually working with the people and going through everything together, you don’t watch them do everything while you tell them what to do.…

Reflection on Book Title “The Leader, The Teacher & You” I share the same sentiment with the author that “Walk the ground!” is essential for a leader to earn respect from the ground. Walking the ground also requires social competency skills such as being able to “communicate to influence” and having “interpersonal effectiveness”. In future, I will apply this principle of “Walk the ground!” by constantly engaging my superiors, peers and subordinates for their guidance and opinions through cohesion and feedback sessions on how various tasks can be done more effectively and efficiently. Through these sessions, I will seek to understand their concerns and challenges in their area of work.…
