Globalization is the “organization that links distant communities and expands the reach of power relations across regions and continents.” The expansion of state borders, due to globalization is enabling a “global community”. There has been recent controversy within politics surrounding globalization, on whether it is beneficial to the global society or detrimental to individual states. Globalization has had a negative effect on citizenship. Firstly, the weakening of state power has shown a decrease in political communities. Secondly, the rapid increase in globalization has caused state sovereignty to decline. Lastly, the increase in transnational corporations has had a negative impact on states. The weakening of state power has created a declining trend for political communities and how they are able to develop. Political communities are “community that wishes to govern itself and be free from alien rule.” States rely on citizen’s loyalty and globalization has created a diminution of loyalty within countries, and a loss of citizenship. Citizen’s reliability within their state is of utmost importance, but globalization is brining state power to question “Modern states are no different from their predecessors in trying to ensure that they can count on citizens’ loyalty when security and survival are at stake.”.
