Although the benefits might be rewarding, given the past interactions of different countries, races, and nationalities, I do not believe Earth is able to handle the differences of an alien species. Furthermore, in popular culture, entertainment outlets, such as novels, television, and films, have portrayed alien species as vastly different from human species. In more cases, the alien species ravages Earth in search of resources. Additionally, I believe the same things about Earth, and it is difficult for me to imagine that Earth will ever show redeeming qualities that will allow us to contact other lifeforms in the universe without starting a war. These misconceptions are mostly from taking history classes, and learning about the conflicts that each nation gets into when trying to expand or gain better economic wealth.
