I was taught to keep my sexuality and sexual desires a secret merely because I was a young female. I did not realise that this was the reason at first, mind you, because it was well hidden within non-gendered comments, my personal favourite being, it’s all in your head. I only realised that I was not supposed to be a sexual being – based mostly on gender – when my mother used the token phrase boys will be boys. It clicked. My mother was taught that only men should be allowed to exhibit sexual tendencies. Despite differing views of sexual etiquette, my mother and I both believe that sexuality and the extent to which sexuality applies is up to the individual. A young woman who wants to copulate with tens of partners is just as valid as a young woman who wants to copulate with one. Female sexuality must be nurtured in any capacity. This outlook, though ideal, is quite hypocritical for my mother to share with me. For someone like my mother, who often pushes her views of sexuality onto others, it is unexpected that she would encourage sexual choice within an
