One reason the utilitarian approach leads to the morally right thing to do is, it leads to more happiness and pleasure. An example of utilitarianism is, you have to kill either a black teacher or a white high school student to save the high school from an intruder trying to shoot the whole school down. In this case, if you applied the utilitarian theory, choosing the black teacher would be the right thing to do because he has more to offer to the community. He is more useful, he can teach people. One strength about utilitarianism is, it is not just what one person feels is the right thing to do. It is not about opinions but more on what the moral thing to do is. Meaning it is for everyone to do the right thing.
One might object to my argument because they might feel it is racist to pick the black teacher and let the white student die. If you were not applying utilitarianism it would depend on what race you are. Although the theory of …show more content…
The utilitarian principle is supposed to be absolute. Utilitarianism can be broken down into two parts, the value theory and the theory of right action, given what is valuable. The value theory is the only thing that is valuable in its own right, happiness and the absence of suffering. Oher things like money might be deliberately valuable because it helps us get happiness. The theory of right action produces the most of what is valuable. If you put those two pieces together the value theory and the theory of right action, you get
