The Evolving Planet Essay

The Evolving Planet exhibit at the Field Museum of Natural History is a work of art that thoroughly explains the story of life through evolution. The exhibit begins by informing us about organic compounds coming to be on earth and how all living organisms require organic compounds. It moves on to explain single cell organisms developing from organic compounds and then becoming self-sufficient using energy from the sun. These single-cell organisms grew into more complex beings with genetic variation. Multi-cellular life evolved on the ocean floor; scientists believe this was an effect of a change in oxygen on earth. After this occurred, there was an explosion of life in the oceans. Animals developed features that are more like the features present nowadays, like skeletons. These skeletons have helped to give scientists a bigger picture on life at this time frame because in some instances, the skeletons would fossilize. The lack of scientific evidence becomes major proof for creationists to disprove Darwin’s theories. Unfortunately for creationists, there is plenty of scientific evidence and new evidence is being uncovered every year. In 1994, an important piece of evidence for the evolution of whales was discovered by paleontologists. An Ambulocetus natans’s fossils were found. These were fossils of one of the first ever whales. It had small hooves and fingers on the front legs, and extremely large feet on the back legs, along with a long tail resembling a whip. This creature could move on land like a seal but swim with the help of its tail and hind legs. More and more fossils are being found that give evidence for transitional species that help to support Darwin’s theories.
