Wives tales and horror stories consume the talk of the village. All of these centered around the fear and danger that radiates from the dark forest. Wolves have laid claim to it and with the barren months of winter upon them, the wolves look to the village for an ample food source. Villagers are terrorized and frightened by the desperate wolves, except one. Red, the youngest and most beautiful daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the village, has been sheltered away to become the perfect, trusting, and innocent daughter to represent her family. Superstition and wives tales created by the villagers made the forest more dangerous than just the reality of wolves. In this fiction, superstition is very real in the forest and straining off the the main path can be a risk. Naked men turned into werewolves control the less beaten paths of the forest making the main paths the safest to travel, but even then we see in the case of Red that nowhere in the forest is safe. She was shown a different life as a child and it has changed how she handles the circumstances life brought to her. At the beginning of the story, Red was innocent, young, and most importantly naïve, but this does not mean she has no capability to grow. Personally, I did not see Red’s capability, there was no doubt that Red was going to be swallowed up by the hunter just like her grandmother because of her weaknesses and lack of experience. To my own shock, Red turned the table and did not fear the werewolf because of the pain it had inflicted on others, but felt compassion for the hunter and the pain that had been inflicted on him. Although, knowing that the hunter had deceived her and hearing her grandmother’s bones rattle underneath the bed, Red was capable of showing love, compassion, and forgiveness.
