The Everlasting Impact of Writing
"What lasts is what is written. We look to literature to find the essence of age." - Peter Brodie Here, he writes about the power of writing, and it's ability to make history. The themes in the novella surround both controversial topics of the 1930s as well as what it was like to live then. During the Great Depression many people fled to California in order to find work, these people became known as migrant workers. Since so many people fled, this migrant life became the cultural norm of the 1930s. Working long hours and getting paid little made for less than the ideal life and many people were unaware of the conditions in which these workers lived. In the novella George does a good job describing the feeling of most of the workers. "' Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place..."' (13). Life and loneliness are very prominent topics within the novella. Steinbeck helps readers to try and understand what the culture of this time period was like surrounding the migrant workers.
