The Importance Of Turning Point In School

In the early 19th century, before schools even had schedules for classes teachers were expected to know a little about each subject. The late 1800’s brought along a new type of schedule called the Carnegie Unit and this became the standard for most schools. This new schedule consisted of 50 minute classes the were taught by a teacher who only taught one subject. Other attempts were made to either replace this new schedule or modify it. One of the modifications to the Carnegie Unit was extended study periods and bigger classrooms. When tested the modification failed due to the students having too much unstructured free time. A publishing called Turning Point came out after most schools were using the the Carnegie Unit. Turning Point said that …show more content…
In that short time frame a teacher must take role, collect homework, teach, and give out that night 's homework. All of these distractions shorten how much the students actually learns. The 50 minute classes truly end up only being about 35-40 minutes of teaching and the other time is lost (McLeod). With only 35-40 minutes teachers struggle to fit the complicated lessons in and then cannot help students with questions. This has caused to teachers to favor block schedules since they allow the teacher more time to prepare for class (Stidham 133-135). Since the teachers only have certain classes on certain days it allows them come up with more creative ways to teach the lesson. More creative lessons help keep the students interested in the class and also help the teachers from getting burned out themselves. Block schedules also give the teacher the ability to spend more time going over homework from either the night before or that day. Therefor block schedules give teachers the ability to see who is struggling and help that student.
