The Impact Of Climate Change In The European Union

Improved Essays
European Union is recognized as one of the leaders in implementing new environmental policies and instruments for them. The targets of the EU are often ones of the most ambitious in the world. Adaptation strategies are developing continuously to strengthen the resilience of Europe. However, for the EU member states it is not an easy task to collaborate in dealing with environmental issues, since their recourses and targets differ. For instance, in October 2014 The EU leaders agreed on greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030. It was a complicated process as renewable energy targets were constantly opposed by such countries as Poland, which depends on coal heavily, and the UK, which continues to explore shale gas. On the other hand, Germany …show more content…
If, for instance, climate change impacts led to international instability and reductions in the supply of raw materials and commodities, the UK could experience impacts starting from increased food price to changing migration patterns because of the move of environmental refugees from areas affected by extreme weather conditions (Hicks and Ranger, …show more content…
The legislation for the fifth carbon budget will be proposed by the government in 2016. The UK Committee on Climate Change carries out an assessment each year on whether the United Kingdom is going to meet its carbon budgets, and reports the results to the Parliament. Currently the country is going to outperform its first two carbon budgets. Economy-wide emissions fell by 7 % in 2011 from a base point of 1990. The reason for this is mainly the global recession and mild winter temperatures. However, in 2011 the rate of emissions reduction due to environmental policy measures was less than 1%. To meet next carbon budgets the reduction of emissions should be at the level of 3% a year. The progress towards the low carbon economy will be required in future (Committee of Climate Change,

The only way economic policy can truly work is if all the world governments participate in the solution. More particularly, slowing climate change involves the specific lifestyles of every person on Earth. The majority of people on this planet must make an active choice to make changes to their habits in order to reduce their carbon footprints, but with current technology, it is not yet possible to do so without leaving convenience…

Among the targets was for the United States to reduce the overall emissions to between twenty-six to twenty-eight percent by the year 2025. However, with the adverse effects that have been because of climate change not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world, the fight to reduce carbon emissions need not stop in 2025. There have been challenges implementing the goals set by President Obama especially with the current president reversing some of the laws especially on the use of coal in the production of electricity which the Congress can counter (Ser, 2017). The United States being a major contributor in terms of humanitarian aid to needy countries, should embrace policies that would reduce carbon emissions for it is better to use resources to curb climate change other than using those resources when a disaster which can be avoided strikes. Indeed, it would be more cost-effective for the United States to curtail carbon emission to reduce huge losses experienced because of hurricanes, heat waves, and…

When taken into perspective, these theories can help analyze current event articles and the diversity of globalization. BBC News recently reported that “Bank of England’s Carney warns of climate change risk”. It was stated that there was an increase in weather-related catastrophes which led to an increase in economic costs. Carney states that this financial hit did not affect this generation, and that this would only disregard that there will be future issues. This would just push the problems onto future generations, most likely with a larger impact.…

Germany: 19th century was the starting point of German environmentalism. Postwar environmentalism proved to be a way of liberation. Employing a wide range of methods, activists drew a new picture of Germany’s future. They wanted hilltop wind farms, rooftop solar panels and a post-nuclear nation, a land whose fish would be edible. Nowadays, the majority of Germans support the creation of an economy run on 100% renewable energy, 84% believe that this goal should be achieved “as quickly as possible.”.…

Guinn_ENVM620_M5_GradedAssign 1. Climate change is defined as a broad range of changes that are happening to the planet and include: Rising sea levels, shrinking mountain glaciers, accelerated ice melt at the poles, which is primarily the result of human activity of burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide (a heat trapping gas) into the air (Dunbar, n.d.). The key arguments in support of global climate change include both natural cases and manmade causes. Some of these natural causes include changes in the earth’s orbit and the amount of energy coming from the sun, in addition to oceanic changes and volcanic eruptions (Dunbar, n.d.).…

Climate Change is a worldwide phenomenon, that affects the regular conditions of the environment. Historically, there have been several conventions, as the Kyoto Protocol, in order to address this problem. However, only until the Paris Agreement, countries have committed to take actions to mitigate this issue. In fact, Canada did not demonstrate any interest in the subject, but rather the provinces took the initiative and started to use regulations to reduce CO2 emissions. By 2015, Canada has changed its standpoint and presented a strong commitment to the cause, stablishing a main target with different approaches to counteract the problem.…

The fact that they are legitimate potential candidates for European accession, gives them another incentive to subscribe and respect international (such as target 6.5) and European norms which tend to take a more environmentally friendly approach. Moreover, Canada is also very cognizant of global warming; specifically, air pollution is of extensive concern among its urban cities. An estimated 82.2% of Canada’s population lives in urbanized areas; these areas are notorious for poor air quality as a result of considerable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2011, Canada ranked 1st in the world for GHG emissions per capita, and, according to the most recent global data (2013), Canada ranks 9th for cumulative GHG emissions. Canada recognizes that carbon and GHG emissions contribute to detrimental phenomena, such as acid rain and climate change. As it pledged in 2016 to reduce oil and gas sector methane emissions by 40-45% by 2025, the country has already begun to commit to long-term GHG…

The United States has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions up to 28 percent in an effort to fight the effects of climate change. The main four greenhouse gases (or GHG) are: carbon dioxide (released in the atmosphere through burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal as well as solid waste and deforestation), methane (emitted in the production of natural gases as well as livestock and agricultural practices), nitrous oxide (emitted during agricultural and industrial activities) and fluorinated gases (produced through industrial processes and commercial and household uses). According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as humans increase their GHG emissions, the gases build up in the atmosphere and warm the climate,…

On 18 November 2016, Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama made an emotional appeal to the next US President: "President-elect Trump, I formally invite you to Fiji…we will show you how we are already having to move entire communities out of the way of the rising seas…the world looks to America for leadership as we work together to confront this challenge to our survival and the well-being of our planet.” This desperate appeal of a statesman demonstrates the dilemma of climate change: It has regional economic and security implication but the solutions to this partially human caused problem have to be found on the global level in a consensus. There are incentives for nations, to avoid involved costs for countering climate change. On the other…

However, it is cruel irony that some areas that experience the most tragic effects of climate change are the ones that had the least to do in causing it. Preventative measures against persisting climate change have taken precedence within the European Union (EU). Leaders of the EU aim to make Europe into a more energy efficient economy with a smaller carbon footprint, and support other countries in doing the same, including the Philippines. Currently, the EU contributes to the securing of natural resources and raising awareness about natural disasters…
