The quote “success follows a predictable course” applies to Marita because she was an underprivileged child that came from a disadvantaged family who ended up becoming a successful student, at only twelve years old. I believe this quote means that success, itself, has a path it needs to follow before one actually succeeds at, well, succeeding. Success does not just happen overnight. Certain steps need to be put into action to allow that success to happen. One of the studies in this chapter showed that children from poor families tended to lose knowledge in certain subjects like math and reading while children from rich families flourished, but not because the poor children do not want to and the rich children do, it is solely because the more poor children are not exposed to certain resources like the more rich children are, therefore not getting the same experiences. Marita, while she is from a poor background, had the ability to flourish like the other rich children because she was giving opportunities, and she took them. Personally, this quote applies to me because if I weren’t given the opportunities I was given, like attending a better school, or getting coached for sports by actual coaches instead of some players dad, I was able to flourish. I am not rich, and I most certainly don’t have some resources many other children my age do, but through the opportunities I was given, I was allowed a chance to
