The Ethics Of The Mattel Industry

Decent Essays
Manufacturers should have special obligations to consumers and society to a certain extent. It is the responsibility of the manufacturers to make sure that the products they produce are safe and harmless. However, these responsibilities are limited because there are things that not everyone can foresee as being harmful. Hindsight is always 20/20. Taking Mattel feeding doll for example. They were not able to predict that this doll would cause so much issue with consumers. However, they did the right thing by making the massive recall. If society put blames on the manufacturers on everything that is harmful, it creates an unbalance trays of responsibilities.

Mattel has been extremely effective in encouraging ethical and legal conduct.

The violations that Natural Balance caused are the Clayton Act and Robinson-Patman Act. These acts prohibit price discrimination. Price discrimination occurs when a seller charges various prices to different buyers for “commodities of like grade and quality, with the result being reduced competition or a tendency to create a monopoly” (Twomey & Jennings, 2014, p. 83). Natural Balance’s business in Mexico is not legal and ethical, until they know if they require special licensing for exporting in Mexico. One example that was brought up multiple times was the solder. Yes, a lot of solder that is used is lead based which has been found to be quite dangerous for humans and should have safety precautions for it. Even though we know how dangerous lead is now, but I am not sure if the companies back then knew how dangerous lead was. For example, a lot of the things used to be made of lead, like paints and piping, but it wasn’t until the late 1900s that these laws regulating lead was put in place. Similarly, I think this might apply to some of the other materials used as simply a lack of knowledge on the extent of how dangerous some of these things were, but that’s just playing devil’s advocate.…
