No scandal had so much impact as the investigations that put to tremble to soccer: so far, the suspensions caused, behind bars or accused of taking bribes to the last three presidents of the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, and unleashed court cases that will not be resolved until at least 2016.
It seemed like any normal appointment of the FIFA Executive Committee. The top leaders in soccer met at the end of May at the headquarters of the Agency in Zurich, most of them hosted in the luxurious Hotel Baur Au Lac with rooms that cost thousands of dollars per night. But what happened in the early morning of 27th of May set in motion events that changed the face of soccer forever.
Seven leaders were arrested on that day by the Swiss authorities at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, that hours after they announced the accusations against 14 people, including senior/top officials of CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, and entrepreneurs of marketing in sports. The charges had to do with the payment of millionaires bribes in exchange for the commercial rights of tournaments as the “Copa America” (American Cup), “Copa Libertadores” and the worldcup eliminatories.
Blatter was re-elected two days later to a fifth term as President of FIFA, but the damage was already done. Under immense public pressure and besieged by another search of the Swiss authorities about campaigns and the voting in order to choose the place of the worldcup for 2018 and 2022, the leader announced that he would leave office…
