Stem cells are cells that have the capacity to become different types of cell in the body. They also have the ability to replace or repair damaged tissue or cells. Stem cell research forms part of the regenerative medicine field. Stem cell research requires practices that require the genetic manipulation of microorganisms in order to improve the quality of human life. Stem cells can be procured in three different ways: Adult stem cells, umbilical cord blood, and embryonic tissue (Harris, Morgan, and Ford, 2004).
Momentarily there is a consensus that the best of all three sources is the embryonic stem cell. In spite of the fact that stem cells have proven to help and be effective it rises a lot of controversy and ethical issues. The reason

The issue became so big that the Dickey-Wicker amendment was passed in 1996. This amendment basically stated that federal funds wouldn’t be used to help a research that creates, hurts, or destroys a human embryo (Robertson, 2001). Due to all the issues with this topic of stem cell research scientist are looking for alternative ways to obtain these embryonic stem cells without hurting or destroying a fetus. Varies approaches were highly considered for more investigation such as obtaining stem cells from an embryo that has passed away, stem cells from embryos by biopsy that is nondestructive, or stem cells from dedifferentiated somatic cells (Hyun, 2010). Aside of all the controversy and anger from opposed groups, many actually volunteer and support stem cell research. Donor couples who support this research believe that stem cells can extend and improve someone’s quality of life. Embryos from these couples are donated not for their personal infertility treatment but rather for them to be used for stem cell research. These couples are willing to help because they understand and foresee that stem cells are fruitful and that in a future these stem cells might be a great cure to many diseases (Lysaght and Campbell, …show more content…
It is worldwide the leading cause of death. Researchers are trying to see if in a future heart muscles that have become damaged by heart attacks can be regenerated by injecting the heart with stem cells. Laboratory experiments have been successful with rodents but the hope is that it will someday be successful with humans (Lee and Segers, 2008). Stem cell research hold future promises that someday we will have cure for diseases that degenerate what is considered a healthy quality of life. Controversy will still arise until other approaches are proven to be as effective as obtaining the cells from an embryo. As to my opinion of stem cell research, I believe that it is an opportunity to be able to find cures for so many diseases with just one cell. I believe it should be researched as much as possible to one day achieve that goal. It would be wonderful to find a cure for cancer, Autism, Parkinson’s disease, etc.
When it comes to taking a side about destroying an embryo to acquire the cells, I don’t think it is right but as of right now there is no other choice that is as effective as embryonic stem cells. So I agree with the embryonic stem cell procedure till continue till someday we find a different approach to obtain the cells without having to harm or destroy a human
