The code of ethics was established to outline the values and morals of a business or organization for the purpose of handling potentially unethical or questionable issues. They are imperative to the company or organization in that they provide clear guidelines for their employees to keep them from crossing boundaries that are deemed unethical and to spell out the consequences if they do engage in such behavior. These businesses are there to support their community in order to maintain the integrity of their company and the company brand. Companies thrive on ethical practices because competition is tough and customer loyalty and trust become crucial to ensuring a company’s survival. Their code of ethics is influenced by their vision, mission and core values, which in turn help to promote a high quality of life through leadership and support for the well being of families and communities. A professional in this field would be expected to adhere to the code of ethics to prevent situations that may put a consumer in harms way. In other words, if that professional were to attempt to help increase sales for the sake of the company’s profit by providing misleading information about a given food’s ingredients or nutritional value, that professional would not only be violating a code of ethics or losing consumer trust but also, possibly, endangering life. A consumer who is allergic to one of those misleading ingredients could purchase the food in good faith, eat it and go into anaphylactic shock. Each organization has steps to follow when filing a complaint. The AAFCS does not outline the steps to report unethical situations. However, the best approach to report a situation that is unethical would be to report the incident to higher-level management unless management is causing the problem. If that is the case, it is recommended that the person who witnessed the unethical incident report to Human Resources. Human Resources would then be obligated to take appropriate
